CUTTACK: Even as the assault on two youths at Jhanjiri Mangala late on Friday night has been linked to student politics and internal squabbles in the BJD, the incident is attributed to dispute between the victims and some people of the locality. Premananda Mohapatra alias Viki (26) of Rajabagicha was the target of the assault allegedly due to his own doings. He reportedly was involved in a bitter dispute with some persons of Jhanjiri Mangala locality. And due to this, he allegedly used to taunt the people of the area deliberately, which had led to confrontational situations on several earlier occasions. On Friday night, Mohapatra and one Rashmiranjan Das alias Kapuna (25) were passing through the area on a motorcycle when he allegedly passed unsavoury remarks on the people. He also hurled abuses in the name of the persons who he had disputes with. With situation going out of hand, the people allegedly ganged up and caught hold of him near the Jhanjiri Mangala temple. He and Rashmiranjan were assaulted with sticks and even sharp weapons. Both had sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the SCB Medical College and Hospital. Badambadi police on Saturday registered a case against more than 10 persons in the connection. Mohapatra, however, has criminal antecedents and has cases under the Arms Act pending against him, police said. Police discounted the reports that the attack was the fallout of the intensifying war between factions in the BJD after the recent students body elections. Both Mohapatra and Das were never students of any college or were remotely connected with student politics, police said.
