Jharkhand MLAs get bathroom allowance
Government has sanctioned Rs 150,000 to each legislator in Jharkhand to upgrade the toilets in his house.

Ranchi: Hike in salaries, laptops and now fancy toilets - the Jharkhand politico's desire for perks seems boundless with the government now sanctioning Rs 150,000 for each legislator to upgrade the toilets in his house.

Sources in the government said the money would be spent on installing modern conveniences, redoing tiles and other essentials needed for that feel-good bathroom. The renovation work would start after the rains.

The moves follows complaints from legislators that the bathrooms in their homes were not up to the mark.

After formation of the state in November 2000, legislators' salaries were increased from Rs 11,000 to Rs 32,000 per month.

Then, the Local Area Development Fund was doubled from Rs 10 million to Rs 20 million per annum, equivalent to that of parliamentarians. Besides, each legislator was provided a laptop worth Rs 85,000.

State ministers are no less demanding. Millions of rupees have recently been spent on renovating ministers' homes and each has been given a luxury vehicle worth Rs 1.6 million.

What's your reaction?
