J&K Highway closed for 2nd day due to snowfall
Over 400 vehicles, including 70 passenger vehicles, are stranded on the highway.

Jammu: The 300-km long Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, only surface link between Kashmir and rest of the country, remained closed for the second consecutive day on Saturday due to heavy snowfall at two stretches with over 400 vehicles stranded on the road.

"The highway remained closed for second day today due to heavy snowfall at Jawahar tunnel and Patnitop. The road has been very slippery and at several places.", Senior Superintendent of Police, Highway, Kifayat Hyder.

Due to closure of the highway, over 400 vehicles, including 70 passenger vehicles, got stranded at various places on the highway, he said adding that men and machines of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) are working round-the-clock to clear the snow and restore traffic on the highway, but intermittent snowfall is making their task difficult.

The Rastriya Rifles, CRPF and police at Jawahar tunnel and Qazigund are trying to assist the passengers.

"We have directed parking of the passenger vehicles and trucks in safe zones so that the stranded people do not face cold conditions. Most of them have been stopped in Chanderkote, Ramban, and Udhampur," he said.

Due to a heavy blanket of fog enveloping Jammu, vehicle movement was slow in the city, traffic police said.

The fog has also disrupted train traffic as over seven trains reached and left Jammu one to four hours behind schedule since yesterday. Chilly winds are blowing in Jammu city resulting in extreme cold conditions.
