Chennai got its first dose of ‘health radio’.
Amid a flurry of activities — zumba lessons, weight-lifting and even a few male cheerleaders to set the mood — Radio O2 was launched at the O2 Fitness Studio, Nungambakkam here recently.
Nina Reddy, executive director, O2 said, “For the moment, the radio station will be exclusive to our gym members at our various branches.
” She added, “But who knows, I see a lot of possibilities in the future,” she added. How did the idea come about? It turns out that exercise is becoming largely entertainment- oriented.
For instance, treadmills with the television channel. “We’ve had members tell us that they chose to join because of our large TV screens near the treadmill,” says Earnest Vijay, fitness director, O2.
“It helps keep away the boredom while walking. ” In other words, keeping healthy is also about staying motivated. This is where the radio programming promises to keep things interesting.
Organised by the Academy of Radio Studies (AORS), fitness freaks can look forward to capsules of health advice from experts, celebrity bytes and direct messages from instructors.
Peppy music will be played in three languages, English, Tamil and Hindi. “But the RJ-ing will be completely in English,” says RJ Dheena, AORS.
Similar to any other station, Radio O2 will h a v e two prime time jocks – RJ Varun in the morning aka Mr O2 and RJ Jessie in the evening. “But in this format to keep it light, all the talking will be in quick snippets,” explains Dheena.
Apart from keeping energy levels high, Radio O2 also hopes to gain more interaction with members through song requests and dedications. “It takes 40 minutes for requests to get on air,” says Vijay.
“So you can pick up your phone before you leave the house and be in time to hear your song played just as you hit the treadmill,” he adds.
Well, whether you own an iPod or not, a pumped-up tune is bound to have a lot more impact when it comes with a dedication from your instructor.
