New Delhi: The conviction of Santosh Kumar Singh in the Priyadarshini Mattoo murder case 10 years after the trial has given a ray of hope to many others like Sabrina Lall and Neelam Katara, fighting protracted legal battles to get justice for their kin.
"My faith in judiciary has been proved right after the verdict. However, the delays in such (murder) cases are frightening and can weaken the case of the prosecution," Neelam said.
"I am happy for Chaman Lal Mattoo. It is sad that he had to suffer a lot. Now, we can hold our heads up and say that justice has been done with their family," Neelam added.
Meanwhile, Jessica Lall’s sister, Sabrina, said, "All of us are pleased at the verdict.”
“It is good that Higher Courts are appreciating the evidence, which is discredited by the lower courts, in the cases. The higher courts are also looking at these evidence fairly," she said.
Neelam Katara's son Nitish was allegedly kidnapped and murdered in February, 2002. Vikas Yadav, the son of UP politician D P Yadav, and his son's cousin Vishal Yadav are the main accused in the case who allegedly killed him for Nitish’s relationship with Yadav's daughter Bharti.
In Jessica’s case, she was allegedly shot point-blank by Manu Sharma, son of a former Haryana minister Vinod Sharma, at a party.
As far as Neelam’s case is concerned, she said the delay in the trial was bothering her. "People who have money can delay the case in so many ways. Now in my case, the main witness was sent abroad two years ago and she is still to depose," she said.
Neelam said in such cases the complainant should be allowed to be part of the trial so that they get a say in the court proceedings. "At least the family of the victim should be allowed to be part of the trail," she added.
