KODAKARA(THRISSUR): The legendary Kaimukku Mana at Mattathurkunnu in the Irinjalakkuda Gramam here is all set for a historic Athirathram in the Aaswalayana (Pakazhiyam)-Boudhayana tradition. The last Athirathram in this tradition was performed 112 years ago.“The site of the yaga then was said to have been the Koodappuzha Mana in Chalakkudy,” Kaimukku Vaidikan Raman Somayajippadu has said. The message of the yaga is peace and prosperity for the entire humanity, with total protection of the environment.Kaimukku Raman Somayajippadu is the Yajamanan and his wife Aryadevi Pathanadi is the Yajamana Patni of the Athirathram being performed from March 23 to April 3 under the supervision of Veda scholar Kaimukku Vaidikan Sreedharan Nampoothiry at the Yagasala set up on the paddyfield near the Kaimukku Mana. The over 4,000-year-old traditional Kaimukku Mana is renowned for possessing and preserving the Threthagni (the holy light lit from Yaga fire and being preserved in the traditional bronze lamp). It is also the only Boudhayana branch known for preserving the chanting the Yajurveda in its pristine purity. Besides, it is one of the six Vaidika families which is authorised to perform a Yaga on its own and also to guide others in performing a Yaga.According to the Yaga stipulations, only a Somayaji, a person who has performed a Somayaga, can be the Yajamana of an Athirathram. Kaimukku Raman Somayajippadu had performed an Agnyadhanam in 1997 and a Somayaga in 2006 at Kaimukku Mana. He is also a reputed astrologer. The ultimate objective of a Vaidika function is the preservation of the environmental equilibrium of the Universe. The Athirathram aims at the generation of positive energy waves by purifying the atmosphere to maintain the pollution-free environment. Spiritually, it cleanses the body and mind of all the participants by driving away all evil thoughts and destructive tendencies. The first three days of the 12-day Yaga are known as Deekshahass. The next six days are known as Upasaddinanagal. The last three days are called Soothyam, the most significant period of the Yaga. The brick-layers of the five-layer homa kundam known as Swena Chithy will be fixed by chanting mantras from the fourth to the eighth day. The Soothyam will begin on the 10th evening of the yaga. The conclusion of the Soothyam will mark the end of the Athirathram.Kaimukku Vaidikan Narayanan Namboodiri, Vidikan Jathavedan Namboodiri, Vaidikan Sreedharan Namboodiri, Thaikkadu Vaidikan Kesavan Namboodiri, Cherumukku Vaidikan Vallabhan Somayaji, Bhasmathil Mekkattu Vallabhan Namboodiri and Panjal Thottam Krishnan Namboodiri are the Acharyas who will play the pivotal roles in the performance of the Athirathram.Kaimukku Vaidikan Parameswaran Namboodiri (Harinan) is the Adhwaryu and Kadalur Sreenath Namboodiri is the Brahman. The Hothan is Naras Ittiravi Namboodiri and the Udgathavu is Panjal Thottam Sivakaran Namboodiri. The Sadasyan is Mallissery Raman Namboodiri. The Yaga is being conducted under the auspices of the Threthagni Foundation, a Kodakara-based Charitable Trust, which has been formed for reviving and rejuvenating the culture of Veda.
