PHULBANI: Daringbadi, which has been in news for the Maoist violence, has scripted a success story in the implementation of MGNREGS. It has secured second position among all the Odisha blocks in terms of expenditure for 2011-12.The block had spent Rs 11.32 crore under the scheme in 2010-11, which is 40 per cent higher in comparison to the previous financial year when it spent Rs 8.39 crore. Besides Daringbadi, Phiringia and Tumudibandha blocks have fared well as far as expenditure of the Central funds are concerned making Kandhamal, the best performer among the 30 districts of Odisha. District-wise, the expenditure in Kandhamal district under MGNREGS has been Rs 76.41 crore.For its landscape, climate and forest cover spread over 769 sq km, Daringbadi is known as the Kashmir of Odisha. In the last few years, Maoists have spread their base in the block and just two months back, it made headlines for the abduction of two Italian nationals from the area.Sources said MGNREGS has come as a blessing for the people of the area, 80 per cent of whom are below the poverty line. “Due to hilly terrain, it is difficult to do manual work in the area but still, we managed to achieve this recognition,” said BDO MK Swain.Of the 24 gram panchayats in the block, the Maoist-hit panchayats of Sikraberg, Parthamaha, Dasingbadi, Sonepur and Bhramarabari saw an expenditure of Rs 1.13 crore for MGNREGS projects like digging and construction of ponds.The BDO added that due to vacancy in the post of junior engineer, measurement of the works undertaken could not be carried out, delaying the payment of wages.
