MANGALORE: The party will provide all possible legal help to arrested journalism student of Mangalore University Vittal Malekudiya and his father Lingappa Malekudiya, said CPM general secretary Prakash Karat here on Sunday. The father-son duo was arrested on charges of Naxal connections. Karat told mediapersons on district jail premises after interacting with Vittal, that the CPM would challenge the decision of the government on arresting him, at the higher court. “We hope Mangalore University will allow him to write his exams,” he said. Revealing plans to organise a protest in front of Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda’s residence on May 28, Karat said a delegation will visit the CM and request him to release Vittal and his father. He denied commenting on West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee’s statements on a television show. She apparently said that the CPM is hand-in-glove with the Maoists. On the party’s stand on presidential candidate, he said, “We are waiting to see who will be selected by ruling party. Our stand will be disclosed after their selection.”
