Kerala government orders Crime Branch to probe Puttingal temple tragedy
An FIR has been registered against temple authorities for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and also under the explosives act.

Kollam: The Kerala government on Sunday ordered the Crime Branch to probe Puttingal Devi temple tragedy in Kollam district which claimed 102 lives and left over 300 injured. A judicial probe has also been initiated and the report will be submitted in six months.

Meanwhile. political leaders across the partyline are making a beeline to the accident site. While Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has visited Kollam, Prime Minister Modi will visit the site shortly and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi is on the way to Kerala.

The mishap due to the display of fireworks occurred on the last day of the seven-day 'Meena Bharani' festivities. Thousands of people had gathered at the temple precincts to witness the fireworks display underway since midnight when the blaze erupted at around 3:30 AM.

The mishap occurred as sparks of the fireworks fell on the store room 'Kambapura' and the fire crackers kept there exploded with a deafening noise.

The Centre has assured the state government all assistance. The Army, Air force, Navy and Coastguard have been roped in for relief operations.

Chandy announced ex-gratia relief of Rs 10 lakh to family of each of those killed in fire tragedy, Rs 2 lakh for seriously injured.
