There are many unique temples across the country. Today we will talk about one such temple which has a surprising story. It is said that a girl vigilantly protects the villagers every day, in the form of a snake. Over time, the villagers started to worship the girl. Numerous festivals and ceremonies are held throughout the year but during the month of Shravan, a grand annual fair is organised which attracts huge crowds. Do you know where this village is located? Let us learn about this unique temple in detail.
The village we are talking about in this article is Kotha Suravaram, located near Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh. The village deity, Sri Paradesamma is worshipped regularly by the local villagers. A priest of the temple mentioned that Sri Paradesamma appears to devotees in the form of a young girl and the villagers believe that she protects the village from all danger. The villagers have also built a temple to worship her.
Who is Sri Paradesamma?
According to the villagers, many years ago, there was a serpent which lived in a coconut grove in the village. It gradually grew into a large anthill. The villagers started to worship that. Whenever the villagers faced any problem, they would come to the anthill, bow down, and express their concerns. Over time, this serpent took the form of the young girl known as Paradesamma. The villagers later built the temple in her honour.
Even today, the anthill can be seen in Kotha Suravaram. The temple has been built around it for the deity. Every year during the month of Shravan, a grand fair is held in honour of Sri Pardesamma, which has now become a tradition for the villagers. People who stay outside make it a point to return to their native village every year to take part in this festival.
This year, despite heavy rainfall throughout the Kakinada district, the devotees visited the temple to worship the Goddess. Although the rain caused some disruption to the temple’s decorations and other activities, the grand fair still drew large crowds.
