Moscow: Russia's Vladimir Kramnik beat Bulgarian Veselin Topalov in a tie-break game on Friday to become the first world chess champion recognised by rival chess bodies for more than a decade, RIA news agency reported.
Kramnik won the final tie-break game out of four to win the championship, being held in Russia in Elista, the capital of Kalmykia.
Kramnik won two of the four rapid chess games, Topalov won one and another was a draw. The final score of the whole match was 8.5:7.5, RIA said.
Kramnik, the reigning Classical World Chess champion, and Topalov, the World Chess Federation champion, had to play the tie-break games after a draw following 12 games in the series.
The match was billed as a reunification between the two rival chess organisations after a 13-year split.
