Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir to be under watch

Enraged over the state government’s silence on the Supreme Court directions to release 9,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery River Protection Committee has directed legislators and people of the Cauvery basin to be watchdogs to stall any attempt to release water from Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir.

The committee members protesting in Mandya town have decided to lay siege to the reservoir and camp on the Cauvery banks to stop the officials from releasing water. Meanwhile, Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) has called for a demonstration in front of Assistant Executive Engineer’s office in Kabini on Sunday to stop the release of water from KRS that has already depleted to 2,274 ft against the maximum of 2,284 ft.

The farmers feared that water would be released as the district administration has directed the Irrigation Department to ban the entry of tourists and public to KRS and Brindavan garden for three days. At an all-party meeting presided over by former MP G Made Gowda, it was said that the farmers will storm the reservoir if water is released. Gowda demanded a separate state for Mandya if the government fails to protect the interest of the people. The Chief Minister should not renege on his promise and ditch Mandya farmers, he added.

Mandal Lal, a Jain Samaj member, suffered burns when he tried to set fire to an effigy of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.KRRS , which spearheading the agitation, has demanded satellite survey of crops in both Cauvery basin and delta region.
