BANGALORE: Bogged down by financial troubles, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is unable to complete road works comprising footpath development, junction improvements and road widening in the city. The Palike does not have land for the project and without transferable development rights, the cost would escalate to Rs. 11,000 crores. The corporation has been unsuccessful in obtaining the land necessary for 454 km of road works. The project has already been divided into 19 packages or tenders. Commissioner Siddaiah said that the original cost quoted for the project was Rs. 3,248 crore with an addition of tender premium charges that would amount to Rs. 1,400 crore.“We need 31,000 property owners to surrender their land for the project. The total land required is about 126 acres of land (43 lakh square metres)”, said Commissioner Siddaiah at the reply session of the budget on Saturday.Initially, the corporation aimed to obtain land through transferable development rights but since people are not willing to give up their land for the project, the commissioner estimates that the cost of the project will increase, making the project infeasible.“With the present financial situation in the corporation, we cannot afford Rs. 11,000 crore,” he said. He also added that the Palike will also have to evaluate the financial cost of every project carefully before sanctioning it. He added that projects involving construction of parks, plazas or fountains will have to wait till the financial conditions improve.
