CHENNAI: As a first step to hone the entrepreneurial skills of students, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC) of Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College, along with the Project implementation Unit of Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women Ltd organised a College Bazaar on Thursday. The two-day exhibition cum sale of products made by Women self-help groups will be on till Friday between 9.30 am and 6 pm in the college campus. The expo, inaugurated by TN Venkatesh, joint commissioner, Education, Corporation of Chennai, has over 15 stalls with 40 women self help groups displaying various products including fancy jewellery, jute products, wall hangings, clay, soft and wooden toys, snacks and candle products. The college launched the cell in September this year with an objective to make students job providers rather than job seekers, said P Malarvizhi, convenor, EDC. “We started off with an idea generation workshop helping students to generate and work on ideas followed by this expo. We hope to continue this in the following years,” she said.Around 450 students of the EDC organised the College Bazaar. “The women in the stalls are not educated but know how to make a product, market it and sell them — skills that our students can learn. As next step, students who are skilled, would educate the community,” said S Narasimhan, principal of the college.“This expo has helped us in many ways. We can get ideas and tips from the women in SHGs that can help us be self-employed and boost our self confidence,” said a student. Women SHGs in the expo were those identified by the TN Corporation for Development of Women through 25 NGOs. There were more than 30,000 SHGs under the control of the TNCDW in the city with each group comprising of 12 to 20 members, including 4.95 lakh women members, said a TNCDW representative at the expo. “We specialising in products made only of jute fibre. There has been good response for our products,” said Thangalakshmi of Shenbaga Poo group.
