Commission asks UGC to make question papers of past exams and model answers to NET applicants.

New Delhi: Candidates appearing for the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) National Eligibility Test for the recruitment of lecturers may soon be able to use the Right to Information Act and look at the recruitment process.

The Information Commission has ordered the UGC to provide question papers of past exams and model answers to applicants.

Information Commissioner O P Kejariwal rejected UGC's plea that disclosure of such information were always regarded as confidential and hence cannot be provided to applicants under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

The Commission directed UGC to disclose last five years' cut-off marks of the NET examination for lectureship in colleges. The order came on an appeal filed by one Ravindra Kumar, a resident of Ghaziabad who was denied the access to previous five years' question papers along with model answers.

The Commission asked the UGC to consider its order in their meeting and provide cut-off marks and other information to applicant Kumar.

Kumar had approached the Public Information Officer of UGC seeking information about selection process in NET exams along with details regarding cut-off marks.

The CIC had earlier directed the Union Public Service Commission to disclose the cut-off marks to unsuccessful civil services candidates which was hailed as a move towards achieving transparency. However, the UPSC has challenged the CIC order in the Delhi High Court.
