BANGALORE: Land-grabbing could, in all probability, become a thing of the past, if a legislation which was passed in Legislative Assembly on Friday is anything to go by.The Karnataka Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Bill, 2011, seeks to prohibit person (s), societies and builders from grabbing lands belonging to the state government, local authorities, religious or charitable institutions, either by force or by deceit.“The Bill, which was earlier passed in both the houses of the Legislature in 2007, was sent back by the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs, recommending that land belonging to Wakf, Hindu religious institutions and charitable endowments be included in the ambit of the Bill,” Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S Suresh Kumar informed the house.Following the suggestion, the Bill incorporated the above-said provisions. It must be remembered that the final report of the Joint Legislature Committee on encroachment of government land in Bangalore Urban district headed by former MLA A T Ramaswamy revealed land grabbing of over 45,000 acres of land worth over Rs 50,000 crore.
