Loading of fuel on schedule

Even as protests against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project (KKNPP) continued on Monday, the scientists and engineers engaged at the plant exuded confidence that the fuel loading process would commence, as scheduled, on September 13. Around 150 Russian scientists were involved in the preparation work for the fuel loading in Unit I of India’s largest nuclear power plant, official sources said.

They would oversee the process as enriched uranium is filled into the nuclear tubes from the 163 fuel assemblies that would be loaded onto the reactor core. The entire process, to be overseen by officials from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), was expected to be completed within a month, the sources said.

Meanwhile, police safely escorted the staff and scientists of KKNPP, who were ferried to their township in Chettikulam, 12 km from the plant. But, staff living in various places at Kanyakumari could not return to their villages as the roads were blocked. They were put up at the township guest house.
