Colombo: Sri Lanka's Tamil rebels on Thursday indefinitely postponed truce talks with the government.
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) pulled out of proposed talks with the government on saving a troubled truce indefinitely.
The rebels told Norwegian peace envoy Jon Hanssen-Bauer that they would not attend the talks rescheduled for April 24 in Geneva and did not give a new date.
"Until a stable and conducive environment is created, we will not be able to attend the talks," LTTE's Nitharsanam website quoted the group's political wing leader S P Thamilselvan as saying.
"Until the government implements what was agreed to in Geneva (during previous talks in February), including the disarming of para-militaries, the violence will not stop. Geneva talks are not possible until a stable situation is created," Thamilselvan said.
The talks were originally due on April 19 but later put off by five days at the request of the Tigers. Hanssen-Bauer travelled to the rebel-held political headquarters in Kilinochchi today for talks with the Tigers on saving the ceasefire that came under renewed pressure following a surge in violence.
