Lucknow Univ sacks goons with Phds
Criminals were found pursuing Ph D courses without having any thesis papers, documents or even the requisite qualifications.

Lucknow: After throwing out students accused of crimes, Lucknow University Vice Chancellor RP Singh has taken another step to restore order on the campus.

Students accused of crimes and enrolled in Ph D programmes will have to show research papers and supporting documents to be able to continue their course.

The move followed a startling revelation that many criminals were pursuing Ph D courses without having any thesis papers, documents or even the prerequisite qualifications.

"All the applicants will have to show at least one article published in a reputed international or national journal to get admission into a Ph D course," Singh said.

"I have set up a research advisory committee to screen all applications for admission to Ph D programmes and the new rule would have to be strictly followed," he added.

"Their obvious idea was to somehow continue on the university rolls so that they could use the campus as a nursery to enter mainstream politics," the vice-chancellor said.

According to the police, some of these students were booked under the 'Goonda' Act and the Gangsters Act, besides facing various other criminal charges like attempt to murder, extortion, kidnapping and rioting.

The university authorities were quite confident that by putting an academic rider, the undesirable elements could be kept out of Ph D courses, where anyone with minimum 55 percent marks is eligible.

"I am determined to put this university back on the track after around 200 criminals held the country's largest residential university campus of 38,000 students to ransom," Singh said.

The expelled students would not be re-admitted to the university, he said.
