Kolkata: Days after the brutal gangrape and murder of a 20-year-old girl in West Bengal's Barasat district, a group of women protestors on Monday shouted anti-government slogans and forced Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to leave the grieving family's house within five minutes of her arrival there. Sources say, she felt it was a deliberate ploy to insult her.
The deceased girl's family had earlier refused any kind of help from the West Bengal government and had demanded that all the rapists be hanged to death. The Calcutta High Court had directed the state government to file an affidavit on the progress made in investigations in the case. Seven people have been arrested so far. The court gave the order while hearing a PIL seeking an SIT probe.
Last Friday, a 20-year-old college student was allegedly gangraped and murdered at Barasat in North 24 Parganas. The incident took place when the girl was returning home after taking an examination.
The girl was reportedly dragged and raped in an under-construction building. Her body was found with injury marks near a neighbourhood canal.
Earlier on Saturday, Left Front Chairman Biman Bose had alleged that the Mamata Banerjee government had been "totally silent" to take any action against the rapists "who have made school and college girls their soft targets". "No matter whether the national crime records bureau puts West Bengal on top of crime-prone states, it is to be seen what the state government does to deal with such spurt in criminal activities," he had said.
Kolkata witnessed processions by various political parties and outfits in the past few days against the rise in rapes
and murders in the state.
