After some days of respite in the heatwave conditions, the Indian Meteorological Department again warned that the maximum temperature in Delhi will touch 47 degree Celsius in the coming days and issued an orange alert in the NCR from June 11 to 13.
The maximum temperature mark in Delhi on Monday breached the 43 degree Celsius mark, for the second consecutive day as several other neighbourhood areas experienced heatwaves-like conditions.
Delhi recorded a high of 43.4 degree Celsius, 3.5 notches above the season’s average, the weather department said on Monday while some registered a maximum temperature of over 46 degrees Celsius.
Narela was the hottest at 46.6 degree Celsius followed by Najafgarh at 46.3 degree Celsius, Aya Nagar at 44.7 degree Celsius, Lodhi Road at 43.8 degrees Celsius and Palam at 44.1 degrees, according to the India Meteorological Department.
Orange Alert in Delhi Today
The IMD said Delhi will be on ‘Orange Alert’ from June 11 to 13 while the previously issued yellow alert remains for June 14 given potential heatwaves-like conditions.
The weather office predicted mainly clear skies with heatwave conditions accompanied by gusty winds at speeds ranging from 25 to 35 km per hour during the day on Tuesday.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to reach 44 and 30 degree Celsius, respectively, the department said.
According to IMD, a heatwave occurs when the maximum temperature at an IMD weather station in the plains reaches at least 40 degrees Celsius, and at least 30 degrees Celsius in hilly regions, for a minimum of two consecutive days across at least two stations in a meteorological subdivision.
A ‘severe heatwave’ is declared when the departure from the normal temperature exceeds 6.4 degrees.
Monsoon Likely to Enter South Gujarat by June 12
Southwest monsoon is likely to enter Gujarat in the next 48 hours, an official of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday.
Gujarat has been facing intense heat wave conditions for the past many days.
“The southwest monsoon will enter some parts of south Gujarat in the next 48 hours. South Gujarat is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms on Monday and Tuesday,” the official said.
Heavy Rains in Maharashtra
A day after the onset of the southwest monsoon in Mumbai which led to widespread rains and water-logging in many parts of the city, the IMD has predicted thunderstorms with moderate to heavy showers here on Monday.
Monsoon arrived in Mumbai on Sunday, two days ahead of the normal schedule, due to favourable conditions along the Maharashtra coast, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
