COIMBATORE: Students who enroll in the MBBS course may soon find it tougher to migrate to another college during the duration of the course as the Medical Council of India (MCI) has sought to impose restrictions on such transfers.“Migration from one medical college to another is not the right of a student and normally shall not be allowed,” says the MCI’s proposed Regulations on Graduate Medical Education 2012. It is common for students to seek a transfer to another college if they find infrastructure and academic deficiencies in their institution or if the fees collected is exorbitant. Sometimes, students who enroll under the management quota in a college seek to withdraw their admission if they get allotment in another institution under the Government quota which works out financially cheaper.But, managements of self-financing institutions have been waging a war against this trend arguing that it is difficult to fill up seats that fall vacant. The new regulations make it clear that the MCI would consider permitting a student to shift to another college “only in exceptional cases.” Besides, colleges and universities cannot permit a student to seek a transfer to another institution without the MCI’s nod.
