Meerut: Meerut is on the boil again as seething residents vent their anger at the administration. They are accusing the adminsitration of downplaying the death toll in Monday's fire tragedy.
A mob on Wednesday morning attacked the District Magistrate's office in the city. Armed with rods, the protesters broke window panes and damaged furniture. Some even entered the office and damaged property.
There has been widespread anger in Meerut over a dsiputed death count in the Monday's fire tragedy at Victoria Park.
The administration says only 30 people died but residents and witnesses say they have seen many more bodies.
Many people who visited the consumer fair at the park are missing and their families are still searching for them.
The DM of Meerut, Ram Krishna, now says that the administration only gave permission to start work at the site and not for the trade fair.
"Permission was only given to to start work at the site. After that all the facilities there and the requirements is another story altogether. Search parties have been organised to find missing persons and we have already found some of the people," says he.
