CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday announced that memorials for freedom fighter Singaravelar and one of the leaders of the Dravidian movement, Jeevarathinam, both belonging to the fishing community, would be set up at Foreshore Estate and a statue of Chidambaranathan, who strove hard for the merger of Kanyakumari district with Tamil Nadu, would be installed in Kaliyakkavilai.Making a suo motu statement in the State Assembly, the CM said Singaravelar was born in Mylapore on February 18, 1860, and took part in the freedom struggle. Later, he chaired the first conference of the Communist Party in Kanpur and worked for the welfare of the working masses.Jeevarathinam was born on November 11, 1911, and became one of the pioneering leaders of the Dravidian movement. He worked hard for the welfare of the fishing community and was a close associate of former Chief Ministers C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran.Chidambaranathan was the only Tamilian in the Travancore-Cochin Government in 1948 and he resigned his ministership to end the woes of Tamils.  He was imprisoned in the Thiruvananthapuram Central Prison in 1954 when he was going to Munnar demanding the merger of Tamil-dominated areas with Tamil Nadu. The CM said a statue of Chidambaranathan would be installed at Kaliyakkavilai in Kanyakumari district.
