Met Department Predicts Monsoon Delay, Skymet Thinks Otherwise
Onset of monsoon over Kerala is likely to be delayed by six days beyond its scheduled date of June 1, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest forecast on Sunday. This is expected to delay monsoon in other parts of the country as well.

Confusion over the onset of monsoon rains remains as private forecaster Skymet predicted early rains while India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said the rains will be delayed by 6 days and reach Kerala on June 7.

Monsoon will hit Kerala between May 28 and 30, two-three days before its normal onset date of June 1, private forecasting agency Skymet said on Saturday.

However, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that the onset of monsoon over Kerala is likely to be delayed by six days beyond its scheduled date of June 1.

"It is likely to reach Kerala between May 28 and May 30. Thereafter, it will cover other parts of the country. Present weather conditions are indicating a promising beginning of Monsoon 2016 which is likely to usher in with a bang," Skymet said.

Meanwhile, IMD said, "Forecast suggests that monsoon onset over Kerala this year is likely to be slightly delayed. The Southwest monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on June 7 with a model error of plus or minus four days".

The normal monsoon onset date is June 1 when it reaches Kerala.
