THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The monthly pension for small-scale and marginal farmers, who have less than one hectare land, has been raised to Rs 400 from the Rs 300 announced in the budget. This was announced by Finance Minister K M Mani, who said that most of the small-scale farmers belong to the BPL category and in a financially backward condition.He said that these farmers, who contribute to the growth of the economy are never recognised or given any special benefits, while most workers in the organised and unorganised sectors in the public and private sector are given pension and other benefits.From now on, the head of a farmer family who is beyond the age of 60 will get a monthly pension of Rs 400. These beneficiaries are not eligible to any other pension.As many as five lakh farmers will benefit from this, said Mani. He said that this scheme would require Rs 200 crore per year.
