CHENNAI: More youngsters today are taking up motorcycle racing in the country. This is explained by the spurt in the number of applicants vying to receive coaching at the California Superbike School (CSS). “In its third year, the CSS is coaching 124 students, while the school began with 24 students in 2010 and had 90 students in 2011,” explained Sidharth Varadarajan, director of the mixer-grinder brand Preethi, which is organising the event.Bringing one of the most reputed superbike schools to the country has been the brainchild of Sidharth’s father and motorcycle racing enthusiast, TT Varadarajan. Varadarajan, chairman of Preethi Kitchen Appliances, has ensured the presence of the world’s most reputed motorcycle racing experts for this event. “There are only 10 qualified seminarists in this area in the world, five of which have been brought to Chennai for the coaching sessions,” Sidharth explained. The students are to be coached for six days. This period has been split into two three-day camps. In order to kindle interest in racing and provide coaching to enthusiasts, a subsidised rate of `21,000 is being charged for a three-day camp, Sidharth explained. Elsewhere, it is expected to cost 2,400 USD. For the current year, students have already undergone the first session of training, while the next one will be held from January 20 to 22 at the Irungattukottai Race Track. Two champions in the field of motorcycle riding, Leon Camier and Austin De Haven, were also present at the press briefing. The father-son duo also launched two mixer models of Preethi — Lavendar Pro, which is aimed at the middle-lower mid-segment, and Power One, for the lower income group, during the occasion.
