Mughal ornaments just made a fashion comeback with the Begum jewellery collection that was launched recently at Art Karat in Nungambakkam. Intricately worked in kundan style, the collection features various semi-precious stones such as amethyst, opal and citrine artistically merged with a variety of art forms including pave, carved gold work and South Indian temple work.
Interestingly, the showcase of over 700 pieces has its inspiration drawn from the private collection of the three most influential princesses of the Mughal Era — Begum Noor Jahan, Begum Mumtaz Mahal and Begum Jahanara.
“Some of these pieces have been put together in 15 minutes, while others have taken up to 90 days to create,” said Sushil Kumar, production manager, Art Karat.
As models walked the ramp drawing attention to their elegant necklaces, elaborately crafted earrings and hair pins, one couldn’t help but gaze in awe at a particularly stunning crown piece. White saffires encrusted with delicate pulki pearls, dangling delicately at the bottom — this was definitely one of those head-turners. Another highlight of the collection was a necklace influenced by Jahanara’s style, an emerald choker embedded with smallers stones of green onex and fresh water pearls.
The pieces on display range from `2,000 to over a lakh. The most expensive creation on display is a necklace comprising all nine shades of tourmaline, a rare combination. Engraved with simple leaf patterns, this multi-hued piece of jewellery is priced at `1,20,000.
(The collection will be on display till August 26 at the Art Karat Showroom in Ispahani Centre, Nungambakkam.)
