THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It wouldn’t be too much to say that the ageing Mullaperiyar Dam is bringing  people together like never before - to the footpath before the Secretariat, especially. Everything from candlelight vigils to cartoon campaigns to prayer sessions are being organised here on a daily basis with the call for a new dam becoming more strident. On Tuesday, the Thapovanam Siddhasramam Trust, Kudappanakkunu, staged a mass prayer session urging J Jayalalitha and M Karunanidhi to become ‘more humane’ by allowing the construction of a new dam.As many as 300 families took part in the awareness campaign and prayer for a new dam at Mullaperiyar. A prayer song penned by Madhavacharyan Bodhisathwan Sree Sree Shivadathasahasran was sung by his disciples on the occasion.Madhavacharyan had attempted awareness on the potential danger posed by the Mullaperiyar dam through a series of talks. The Siddhashramam Trust called for continuous prayers until Tamil Nadu changed its stand on the issue. The Cartoon Academy also staged a campaign in front of the Secretariat to drum up support for a new dam on Tuesday. And even apartment owners are not to be left out, apparently. The Sasthamangalam-based Apartment Owners’ Association Kerala has made a call to all households and shops and establishment to light lamps at 7 pm on Friday to express its solidarity. Apartments in various parts of the state will have lighted lamps on terraces on Friday evening as part of the initiative, association general secretary A M Panicker said in a statement.
