Both the runways will remain closed for six hours, i.e., from 11 am to 5 pm

In view of monsoon and regular maintenance, operations at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be completely shut down for six hours on May 9. Both the runways will remain closed from 11 am to 5 pm.

This is CSMIA’s monsoon contingency plan, where the two runways remain non-operational for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair works.

All operations are likely to resume as usual after 5 pm. In this regard, A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was also issued to alert the stakeholders about the temporary closure of the operations.

This contingency plan is also focused on ensuring passenger safety, as landing and take-offs during monsoon can face obstacles due to waterlogging and other such issues.

The maintenance work on the runways are done in collaboration with aviation officials and airlines, ensuring minimum inconvenience to passengers. Airlines were given a notice for this closure well in advance, about six months, to facilitate their schedules.

The scheduled temporary closure of the runway is a yearly practice and a contingency plan, on the same, will help maintain operational continuity and safety of the passengers.

Last year, the runway — for pre-monsoon maintenance and repair work — was shut for six hours on May 2.

CSMIA, being one of the world’s busiest airports, witnesses over 900 flight movements every day. It has a network of runways, taxiways and apron encompassing nearly 1,800 acres.

The yearly practice of runway maintenance work involves the efforts of specialists, who inspect the runway surface for micro-texture and macro texture wear and tear that may have occurred due to day-to-day operations and helping strengthen the airside strip.

The maintenance work is part of the Mumbai airport’s monsoon contingency plan that has been devised to respond and mitigate any possible issues that might arise due to inclement weather in the city during the monsoon season. This ensures business continuity and assurance to all airlines and passengers that the airport functions round the clock, a statement noted.
