A tribal man was brutally assaulted and made to pose like a “murga” (chicken) in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul on Sunday. An alleged group of the Bajrang Dal subjected the victim to casteist slur and physical violence.
According to an NDTV report, the victim was identified Raju Uikey and the man who led the alleged Bajrang Dal group was identified as Chanchal Rajput.
The incident — took place near Subhash School in the city — was caught on camera and its disturbing visuals went viral on social media.
@SP_BETUL_ @BetulCollector pic.twitter.com/ulLtlJLyjI— (@Arvind_Bhil_) February 11, 2024
Uikey, working as a DJ, narrated the horrifying experience and said that around 11:30 pm, when he was on his way back home, Chanchal and his friends from the Bajrang Dal picked him up. “They assaulted me physically and verbally, and used casteist slurs against me,” Uikey was quoted as saying.
The video went viral on social media after Congress leader Jitu Patwari brought the incident to light in a post on X. This prompted the police to take immediate action and file an FIR against Chanchal Rajput and the other three accused.
Betul Superintendent of Police (SP) Siddarth Chaudhary said told PTI, “Information of a viral video was received last night in which a youth was being beaten. We reached out to the victim, identified as Raju Uikey. FIR has been registered in the case. Out of the four people involved in the case, the victim has identified one person.”
Investigation into the matter is underway and the accused will be nabbed soon, Chaudhary said.
