NAGERCOIL: Fifteen inmates were rescued from an illegal children’s home that functioning here on Tuesday. Acting on a tip off, officials from the district Social Welfare Department and anti-human trafficking wing police inspected a children’s home at Saron Street in Nesamony Nagar here and found 15 inmates — 11 boys and 4 girls — living in poor health condition. Among them, two were from Madurai and two from Ramanathapuram, one from Tiruchy and 10 from Kanyakumari. As per Juvenile Justice Act, the administrators should obtain a stability certificate for the children’s home building from the PWD or certified engineers. Regarding sanitation, they have to get a certificate from the Health Department and for their safety, they should get a no objection certificate from the Fire and Rescue Services Department. “But, the ‘Spiritual Home for Children’, which we inspected on Tuesday, has been functioning without any of these certificates,” district social welfare officer Devi Kumari told Express. Except a boy aged below 5, all the other children were semi-orphans (single parent) and due to poor sanitation the children had scabies, Kumari said.“After rescuing the children, we have admitted them to Kanyakumari Government Medical College Hospital at Aasaripallam,” he said. The Child Welfare Committee members from Tirunelveli and the rescued children’s parents have been informed about the matter. “After hearing from them, we will decide about the children and initiate action against the home authorities,” Kumari added.
