Mumbai: The wholesale price of onion has fallen to as low as Rs 700 per quintal in the Nashik market of Maharashtra. Even though retail price is still higher, the sudden price crash has angered and shocked the farmers.
They are now getting a mere Rs 7 per kilo of onion. The farmers are now alleging that the middlemen are controlling the prices and the unprecedented price rise in October and November was artificial.
Nashik onion farmers are protesting the fall in onion prices at Chandwad. Farmers are also staging a rasta roko on the Mumbai-Agra national highway.
According to market sources, the fresh arrival of newly harvested onion is leading to the price crash. The retail price of onion had touched Rs 100 per kg at several places across India in October and November.
Onion price has also crashed even in Karnataka, the second largest onion growing state after Maharashtra. In Bangalore's Yeshwanthapura wholesale market, onion was trading at Rs 2,000 per quintal on Thursday. The retail price has come down to Rs 25 to 30 per kg from Rs 60 to 70 a month ago.
