Navrozes chronicle of Brooms

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Navroze Contractor, the cinematographer of the noted filmmaker Mani Kaul, does not see anything special in his shift from a cameraman to a director. He was speaking about his film ‘Brooms’ at a press meet held on the sidelines of the fourth edition of the international short film and documentary festival. ‘’I joined the film academy to learn cinematography. But they would not teach me since I did not have a degree in a science subject. Hence I learnt direction and in the process also picked up cinematography,’’ he said. Navroze said that he wanted to make a film on brooms since he felt that a broom is the lowest denomination of life. ‘’I have also gone into the mythologies and beliefs on brooms. I found the subject pretty interesting.’’ Jai-Chandiram, president of the International Association of Women in Radio and Television, said that the films that feature in the Asian women directors’ section narrate inspiring tales about the survival and struggle of women in various parts of the world.
