BANGALORE: Bangalore will soon have the country's first National Centre for Diseases Informatics and Research. The Union Health Ministry approved the proposal for setting up a centre in Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) building.
The centre will register the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCD), enabling government to take comprehensive action against the diseases, and carry out research programmes on NCD. This surveillance and monitoring system will further help the government compile standardised data on noncommunicable diseases in the country. The appointment of more than 20 staff members for various scientific and technical position is in progress.

According to Dr VM Katoch, Director General, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), following the union government approval, staff members appointment process is on, and within few months the institute will start functioning in Bangalore.

Speaking on the importance of the institute, Dr Ghosh, scientist at ICMR, Bangalore said that there is not even a single institution in the country which can give the statistics on the noncommunicable disease. With adequate statistics and proper research, government will also be able to calculate the noncommunicable disease burden in the country and simultaneously spread awareness on it.
