NCW demands patrolling on Puri-Konark marine drive

Puri: A day after slamming the Odisha government as "insensitive" towards crimes against women, National Commission for Women on Sunday demanded 24-hour police patrolling on Puri-Konark marine drive where a blind girl was raped and murdered recently. "There should be round-the-clock patrolling by police on Puri-Konark marine drive where women are being assaulted frequently," NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma told reporters in Puri.

Security arrangements must be strengthened in the area as a large number of tourists, including many foreigners, visit Puri and Konark, the NCW chairperson said. Sharma, who is on her first visit to Odisha as NCW chairperson, met the family members of the 14-year-old blind girl who was raped and murdered on June 7 on the marine drive. She said the Commission would get the incident probed by a committee and if necessary, recommend a CBI probe into the matter.

Family members of the victim told the NCW team about the alleged inaction by police in handling the case. They accused the police of protecting the accused and demanded adequate compensation from the state government. Sharma, along with other NCW members, visited the place of the crime and take stock of the frequent assaults on women taking place on the stretch.

Soon after her arrival in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, Sharma had accused the Odisha government of being "insensitive" towards crimes against women. She had said there was increase in crimes against women in the state.
