New Delhi: At least 60 people were feared dead as a compressed natural gas (CNG)-run bus fell into a roadside ditch in southeastern Bangladesh on Saturday.

The fire engulfed the bus, which was carrying 75 passengers, as it skidded into the roadside ditch while trying to save a three-wheeler auto rickshaw.

A police official was quoted by PTI as saying that the survivors, most of them with severe burn injuries, were sent to local hospital.

Police and fire brigade rescuers said they recovered 42 bodies while several others were feared to have burnt almost to ashes.

President Iajuddin Ahmed mourned the deaths and ordered for an intensified salvage operation and proper treatment of the injured.

The accident occurred as transport operators said dense fog amid a countrywide cold wave over the past several days forced the passenger buses proceed slowly relaxing schedules to bring people back to workplaces after the Eid holiday.
