New Delhi: In a latest development, the Nepal government has said that Maoists are not locking up all of their weapons under the United Nations supervision and rejected the claims as "baseless rumours" aimed at "sabotaging" the peace effort.
So far some 3,400 weapons including some AK 47 rifles and mortars were registered at the UN's seven main cantonment sites across the country and some 3,100 combatants have been registered as per the government-Maoists arms agreement.
According to Law Minister Narendra Bikram Nemwang, the arms registered by the Maoists were less than those looted from a single army barrack in Dang some three years back.
He said that he was surprised to learn about the small number of arms being locked up at the cantonments.
"If the Maoists are really serious about the peace process they must give up all arms they possess and understand that violence cannot solve the country's problem," he told reporters in Biratnagar, an eastern Nepal town.
Government spokesperson and Minister of State for Information and Communication Dilendra Prasad Badu also said that the government was "serious" on the issue of Maoists registering only a small number of their arms.
However, Maoists deputy Commander Pasang refuted the claims saying that "Maoists are politically honest".
"Those spreading baseless rumours about our weapons want to sabotage the peace efforts," he said.
