NHRC Notice to MP Govt Over Atrocity Against Dalit Groom
National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to Madhya Pradesh Government, seeking a report on alleged atrocity against a Dalit bridegroom for riding a horse during his wedding procession by some upper caste people in the state.

National Human Rights Commission on Wednesday issued a notice to Madhya Pradesh Government, seeking a report on alleged atrocity against a Dalit bridegroom for riding a horse during his wedding procession by some upper caste people in the state.

The Commission issued a notice to the state Principal Secretary and sought a report within four weeks, according to an NHRC statement released on Wednesday.

The notice was issued after NHRC took suo motu cognisance of a media report which said that a Dalit bridegroom while riding a horse in his wedding procession was allegedly forced to get down and beaten up by some men belonging to upper caste in Sadwa village of Chhatarpur district in Madhya Pradesh on June 7.

Reportedly, as per the "village tradition" only upper caste bridegrooms were allowed to ride a horse while bridegrooms of lower castes had to go on foot to seek the blessings of the village elders.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the report, if true, are serious violation of human rights of the Dalits in the village.
