On Tuesday, May 21, Karnataka government has assured the state High Court that no action will be taken against the vehicle owners who have no High Security Registration Plate (HSRP). The deadline for getting the HSRP was May 31. Now, the state government assured that no precipitative action will be taken till June 12. This condition is for the vehicle owners, who have their vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. The government counsel has made this submission before a vacation division bench, comprising Justice SR Krishna Kumar and Justice Ramachandra D Huddar. It was done during a hearing on appeals filed by the HSRP Manufacturers’ Association of India and others on fixing of HSRP on old vehicles.
As per the associations, the petitions challenging the government’s August 2023 notification permitting only vehicle manufacturers to fix HSRP for old vehicles would become pointless if the May 31 deadline is not extended by the government. When the Bench questioned the impact of the deadline’s expiry, the government counsel said no precipitative action would be taken till June 12. The bench has adjourned further hearing to June 11.
What is an HSRP number plate?
HSRP is a standard set by the Indian government for vehicle registration plates. It comprises security features such as an international registration code and a laser-etched unique serial number. It also includes a 3D hologram of the Ashok Chakra. These plates are easy for the police to identify, and tampering with them is nearly impossible.
As of now, having an HSRP number plate is compulsory for all officially registered vehicles in the country. While states like Delhi, UP, and Tamil Nadu have no official deadline yet, Karnataka has set a clear date.
How to get an HSRP number plate?
Currently, the only way to apply for a new or replacement HSRP number plate is through the official website of the SIAM. It is the short form for Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). It is the apex national body representing the Indian automobile industry.
To apply for this plate, you’ll need details such as your vehicle registration number and chassis number. Other additional details for HSRP include engine number, phone number for OTP, email ID, and either a UPI ID or credit/debit card for online payment.
