Disallowing a blanket ban on crackers during Diwali, the apex court on Wednesday said that crackers should not be used between 10pm and 6am on Diwali and any other days.
The order came after a public interest litigation was filed in the Supreme Court by three infants through their lawyer fathers seeking a ban on firecrackers.
The Supreme Court also pulled up the Centre for not publishing enough ads to raise awareness on rising air pollution due to fire crackers. The apex court has directed the government to actively raise awareness on air pollution via ads between October 31 to November 12.
The Centre, too, had in the past told the apex court that it is not in favour of a blanket ban on crackers and had referred to the 2001 SC ruling which allowed fireworks from 6 AM to 10 PM.
Three infants aged between 3 to 14 months had approached the Supreme Court urging it to ban the sale of firecrackers on Dussehra and Diwali stressing that a pollution-free environment was their right.
