New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday said that his government has no plans to acquire farmland at Deganga in North 24 Parganas district.
Deganga witnessed violence last week over a reported notification for acquiring farmland for industrial purposes. Local people had clashed with the police and torched a police jeep then.
"My government had no proposal in the past as also now to acquire agriculture land for industry at Deganga," PTI quoted Bhattacharjee as saying.
He accused an official of Deganga of issuing a ‘provocative notification’ in a motivated way at Deganga to incite trouble.
Bhattacharjee said that he had directed land and revenue departments to take penal action against the concerned official.
The incident sparked considerable tension in Deganga after officials visited a piece of land, fuelling speculations that it would be taken for industry.
