THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There was no political influence in the investigation of the sensational Kiliroor sex scandal, deposed N Surendran ASP, CBI Chennai, before the CBI Court here on Friday as the cross examination of witnesses came to an end. But Surendran, who took over charge of the investigation on October 6, 2005, from V K Reghukumar, stated that there was a trial by the media in the case. “Thomas Chandy MLA, and media veteran K P Mohanan had no involvement in the case and their names were unnecessarily dragged into the controversy,” said Surendran. The officer had examined 39 witnesses and constituted medical boards to examine the treatment given to the deceased, Shari, as part of the investigation. The Court commented that if the CBI had filed the lab analysis from CSFL, Hyderabad, on the copper content found in the blood samples of the victim Shari, along with the chargesheet, the controversy and suspicion over the case could have been avoided. On cross examination by the defence counsel, the officer deposed that there were 961 calls made from the mobile phone of Shari to that of the resident number of Latha Nair, the accused, during the period from December 1, 2003 to March 27, 2004. A total of 775 calls were made during 117 days from Shari’s phone to that of Manoj, and 541 calls to Praveen, both accused in the case. Surendran said that Shari’s father told during questioning that his daughter had told him that “the accused were behaving as if they were friends’’. The court will consider the case on Wednesday when the accused will be heard again.
