New Delhi: The Centre has asked states like West Bengal, Gujarat and Karnataka, which are yet to notify Right To Education (RTE) rules, to do so at the earliest. HRD Minister Kapil Sibal has written letters to these states asking them to notify the rules in the larger interest of the students, sources in the HRD Ministry said.
So far 30 states and UTs have notified the state rules or adopted the central rules.
The model rules under the RTE Act were shared with the states in the meeting of state education secretaries held as early as in January, 2010 and forwarded to the states/UTs with a request to adopt/adapt them as per their state requirements.
The RTE came into force on April 1, 2010 but several states were slow in notifying them.
Irked over the delay, Sibal had last year said that it would be a "historic failure" if the law "is not implemented" effectively across the country.
The issue was also raised at the state education ministers meet here later last year.
RTE ensures free and compulsory education to every child between the ages of 6 and 14 years.
