Mumbai: A steel scaffolding used in the construction of the financial capital's first Metro line collapsed in the northwest suburb of Sakineka late on Monday night following gusty winds.
No one was injured in the incident which took place when work was going on at the site.
The incident comes two days after an under-construction metro pillar collapsed in Delhi leaving six persons dead. On Monday, a steel girder fell on the same site injuring six labourers.
"It was a temporary scaffolding which we had put up during the construction and it fell due to the strong winds. We removed the debris in two to three hours. Work has resumed at the site," K P Maheshwari, Director of Mumbai Metro One, the consortium building the metro line between suburban Andheri and Ghatkopar, said on Tuesday.
"We are going to conduct and inquriy into why the structure collapsed and come out with a report," he said.
The city has been lashed by heavy rains accompanied by strong winds since last night disrupting road and rail traffic.
Water logging was reported in many areas across the city disrupting traffic.
Dilip Kawatkar, Spokesperson of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, the monitoring agency of the metro rail work being undertaken by Reliance Ltd, said, it was not a major incident.
"The workers have just begun to erect the pillar and it was in initial stage. We will investigate to establish what led to the collapse," Kawatkar said.
The city has been lashed by heavy rains accompanied by strong winds since last night disrupting road and rail traffic.
Water logging was reported in many areas across the city disrupting traffic.
Local trains on both central and Western lines were delayed this morning.
Trains on the central line are running late by 20 minutes while those on the western line are delayed by 30-40 minutes because of a signal failure.
Though water on the tracks is receding slowly but various parts of the city including Hindmata, SV Road, Khar and Wadala are still waterlogged.
