BANGALORE: The Congress on Friday staged a walkout in the Upper House of the Legislature after the Council Chairman rejected their demand for a debate on the fallout of Supreme Court verdict on disqualification of 16 MLAs through an adjournment motion.
Stating that Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa has no moral right to continue in office following the apex court's observations in the case of the 16 disqualified MLAs, the Congress members sought an adjournment motion in the Council. However, Chairman D H Shankaramurthy rejected it stating that the issues mentioned in the notice cannot qualify for a discussion under the adjournment motion. He maintained that the tone of the notice was similar to that of a noconfidence motion which was against the precedence of the Council.

Before this, while making a preliminary submission, opposition leader in the Council Motamma and senior Congress leaders Veeranna Mattikatti and V R Sudarshan maintained that the very existence of democratic institutions was under threat under BJP rule in the state and hence a thorough debate was needed on the matter under an adjournment motion.

Refuting these allegations, floor leader and Minister for Higher Education V S Acharya accused the Opposition parties of making baseless allegations due to frustration.
