CHENNAI: The Metropolitan Transport Corporation is cleaning up its image, literally! With a mission to offer 'clean fleets' to the general public, the State-owned Corporation is on an overdrive to clean the floors of all its buses during afternoon breaks. This move will double the number of times the fleets are being 'dusted' everyday, including the complete washing process carried out in bus depots of the public carrier. According to the new plan, 60 cleaners have been appointed on a contract basis for the purpose. They have been entrusted with the task of sweeping the floors of about 3,200 buses on roads. As soon as the buses arrive at the terminus to facilitate a change over of crew members, post-noon, the cleaners swing into action, clearing the dust and garbage in a bus before moving on to the next. The initiative has been put into effect by authorities in the last few days, following reports on the poor maintenance of the fleets evoking sharp criticism from the passengers. "Buses are being cleaned in 20 major terminuses in the city," official sources with MTC told City Express. "The terminuses include Vadapalani, Iyyapanthangal, Besant Nagar, Thyagaraya Nagar, K K Nagar, Anna Square, High Court and Tondiarpet," the sources added. MTC buses are filled with dust, thanks to the ongoing construction works for the Chennai Metro Rail project, which is causing acute air pollution in different parts of the city. For instance, buses plying on the Jawaharlal Nehru Road between Kathipara and Thirumangalam Junctions wear a dirty look, as most of these buses are filled with dust caused by the Metro Rail project work. Even the sophisticated air-conditioned Volvo buses are no exception, as the floors of the high-end buses are covered with a thick layer of dust, after a few shuttle trips on this arterial stretch.
