Of fun, frolic and water rides

Ever since the first amusement park was opened in 1975 with a few rides, the idea has caught the fancy of many others. After VGP’s attempt at creating a mini amusement park with a few rides, there have been quite a few parks opened for the amusement of residents of the city.

The mythical monkey kingdom of Kishkinta was opened in the city in 1995 at Tambaram. Soon after, VGP upped the ante by reinventing themselves and coming up with their Universal Kingdom in 1997.

The early 2000 saw two more major players entering the fray with MGM Dizzee World and Queensland too opening their gates to the public. The latest to join the bandwagon was EVP World on the Chennai-Bangalore highway.

In the midst of these big players, some smaller ones made their presence felt as well. Dolphin City brought the magic and charm of the sea creatures they were named after and enthralled many children and adults. After the dolphins were gone, sea lions took over to amuse visitors with their antics.

Adjacent to the Dolphin City campus was Little Folks, an amusement park designed especially for kids. Though it started off well when it was launched, it slowly lost its charm. Other minor parks include Dash and Splash, a water park.

All the theme parks keep constantly reinventing themselves by bringing in newer rides and extra attractions in the form of shows and performances to draw visitors. The latest the city can look forward to  is the VGP’s ‘Top Gun’, named after the hit Tom Cruise movie. The ride will take those on it to a height of 50 feet at a 360 degree angle.
