Sharif has pleaded "not guilty" to hitting a Beverly Hills restaurant parking attendant in the face and calling him a "stupid Mexican."

Los Angeles: Actor Omar Sharif of Dr. Zhivago fame pleaded not guilty to hitting a Beverly Hills restaurant parking attendant in the face and calling him a "stupid Mexican."

Sharif, 73, did not attend the brief hearing at Beverly Hills Superior court and entered the plea through his lawyer on Tuesday.

According to a lawsuit filed by parking attendant Juan Anderson, Sharif was "belligerent and intoxicated" when he left a Beverly Hills steakhouse around midnight on June 11 and found that his car was not waiting for him.

Sharif demanded Anderson find the car, offered him a 20 euro note and in the ensuing confrontation called Anderson a ''stupid Mexican'' and assaulted him, the suit alleged. According to the police report on the incident, Anderson refused medical treatment and had no visible injuries.

The Egyptian-born actor, whose movie credits include Funny Girl and Lawrence of Arabia, is charged with misdemeanor battery.

Another hearing was set for early January.
