KOCHI: The strong protests held by the residents of Chundamalappuram in Vengola Panchyat against plywood factories in Perumbavoor finally got a breather with the Vengola Panchayat’s administrative section passing a ‘Stop Memo’ against the construction of a plywood manufacturing unit there. The decision came after the members of the action council threatened to go on an indefinite fast if construction of plywood factories in the area was not stopped. “We also heard that the panchayat is thinking about cancelling the certificate of the company,” said K V Mathai, a member of the action council. On Monday, Express had reported that the action council was planning to move on to an indefinite fast in protest of the ongoing construction of a plywood factory in Chundamalappuram. Protesters had stated that a lot of disparities revolved around the setting up of the factory as the construction permit was allegedly acquired by showing the plan of a residential building and that the licence was given without consulting all the members of the panchayat. Earlier,36 people had been arrested for preventing the construction work of the factory. However, the panchayat president had stated that the company had acquired all the clearance certificates needed for its construction.Meanwhile, Varghese Pulluvazhi, chairman of the action council, told Express that they have temporarily halted the protests in view of the favourable decisions taken by the panchayat. “We have called off the protests. But if more problems arise, we will continue with our stand and initiate the protests again,” Varghese added.
